Hail Damage

Damage to roofing materials caused by hailstones during storms.

What It Looks Like

Hail doesn't need to be large to damage a roof. Quarter-sized hail (about 1 inch) punches holes in asphalt shingles. The damage often appears as black spots where granules are missing, or as cracks and dents in the shingles.

Hail damage is often not visible from the ground. You may need to get on the roof or use binoculars to see it clearly.

Why It Matters

Small hail damage can lead to big problems. Water seeps under shingles and soaks into the roof decking. Within weeks or months, mold grows and the structure weakens. By the time you notice water damage inside, the repair cost has doubled or tripled.

Metal and slate roofs handle hail better than asphalt shingles.

Real timeline: June hailstorm damages asphalt roof. Homeowner doesn't notice. August: water starts leaking into attic. September: mold is visible. Repair cost: $15,000 instead of the original $8,000 claim.
